BGMI Recording Settings That Survive the Upload
Framerate, bitrate, resolution and codec choices that decide whether your montage looks sharp on YouTube or turns to mush during a firefight.
A montage that looks perfect on your drive and blocky on YouTube was not ruined by the platform. It was recorded in a way that gave the platform’s encoder nothing to work with.
Every upload gets re-encoded. Your file is not what viewers watch — it is the raw material a compressor turns into what they watch. Everything below is about handing that compressor something it can do a good job with.
Framerate: pick one and never change it
The single most common mistake is a mismatch between capture framerate, project framerate and export framerate. Each conversion introduces judder that no amount of colour grading hides.
Decide once, at capture, and carry it through. 60fps is the sensible default for a shooter: it survives slow-motion better and it is what the platforms expect from gameplay. 30fps is fine if your hardware cannot hold 60 without dropping frames — a stable 30 beats an unstable 60 every time.
Variable framerate is the quiet killer. Some capture tools default to it, and it drifts out of sync with audio over a long recording. Force constant framerate if the option exists.
Bitrate: high at capture, sane at export
These are two different numbers and people often set only one.
At capture, be generous. This file exists to be cut up and thrown away; its only job is retaining detail through the edit. Compression artefacts introduced here get baked in and then compressed again on upload.
At export, follow the platform’s guidance rather than maximising. Sending a file far above what the platform will keep gains nothing except a longer upload.
Motion is what eats bitrate. A static menu compresses to almost nothing; a smoke-filled fight with recoil and particles is the worst case, and the worst case is exactly what your montage is made of. Budget for the fight, not the average.
Resolution: capture native, never upscale
Record at your monitor’s actual resolution. Upscaling later adds pixels without adding information, and the encoder spends bitrate describing blur.
Downscaling is fine and sometimes helpful — 1440p footage exported at 1080p often looks cleaner than native 1080p, because the extra detail survives the resize as sharpness.
If you are cutting vertical clips for Shorts or Reels, capture wide and crop deliberately. Recording vertically to save a step throws away most of the frame and usually the part that made the moment good.
Codec: whatever your machine encodes without stuttering
Hardware encoders are the right choice for gameplay capture. They cost a few percent of quality at the same bitrate and save you the dropped frames a software encoder causes while a game is fighting for the same CPU.
A dropped frame during the one good fight of the night is a much worse outcome than a slightly larger file.
Audio, briefly
Record game audio and voice on separate tracks if your tool supports it. Merged audio cannot be fixed later — you cannot pull a callout out from under a grenade, and you cannot duck the game under music without ducking your own voice with it.
This is a two-minute setting that saves entire projects.
The check nobody does
Record ninety seconds of an actual fight — not a menu, not a drop — and scrub through it frame by frame before you commit to a settings profile.
Menus look fine at any bitrate. Smoke, muzzle flash and fast turns are where a bad profile shows itself, and where every montage clip you will ever cut is going to come from.
